THE RAILWAY CHILDREN

SYNOPSIS


       This story by Edith Nesbit begins with a scene of a happy family in London. They are Father, Mother and heir three children, Roberta (Bobbie), Peter and Phyllis. Life is stable and a happy one for them until one day their father, who works with the government, is taken away mysteriously by two men. Their mother refuses to tell them the truth except their father is away on 'business' matters.
     
       After that, they have to move to a smaller house in the country near the railway line. Soon, they become fascinated with the railway line that runs by the bottom of slope behind their house. They spend most of their time there.

       They make friends with the porter, engine driver and fireman who work at the railway station and also the villagers. Eventually, they realize how poor they are until Peter has to steal coal from the railway station because they have none to burn on a cold June day. They do not have enough money to buy mother nutritious food recommended by doctor when mother falls ill.

       Then Roberta found the truth about their father. She tries her best to ask help from others. Finally, their father is released from prison where the real culprit is exposed. He joins his happy family at their new home.
